Summary
Stands out- Relaxed atmosphere, great city to live in, lots of outdoors stuff to do within an hour so you can actually do it. Drawbacks- no big names (but does this really matter?) No question the chiefs feel prepared at the end of their residency. (but I think this is the same at all urology residencies) I would definitely rank this program high again Please feel free to talk to me if you get an interview here, I'm one of the two interns, and both of us would be more than happy to discuss the interview process etc (remember we just went through it)...
My Schedule
Your intern year will be typical of most Gen surg years. Wake early between 4:00 and 5:30. Minimal preround, then round quickly. Surgeries start 7:30 or so. As an Intern you are expected to operate, not simply hold a retractor. That's the great part. Generally home by 6:00-8:00 PM and you take call every 3rd to every 5th depending on your rotation. Urology is home call and it is q2 with alternating weekends for the entire program.
My Learning Experience
The faculty at UNM are the most approachable faculty I have ever dealt with. They will take the time to discuss patient issues with you as well as talk about your research options. I don't say this lightly, these are people that I would enjoy going out and having a few beers with...
My Life and Environment
The residents are also a great benefit to the program. I have never seen gen surg residents that like each other as much as this group. There is a get together at least once a month. The Urology residency seems small when you read the number (6) but really it has 10 because the lower level residents in general surgery attend all the urology conferences and get togethers. I couldn't be happier with the staff and people I am working with.
