I think what stands out about this program is that they don't cover the inpatient service. I think most future fellows view this as a positive, but some might not. Dr. Rathmell did say they you could arrange time on the inpatient service if interested. I think the fellows feel extremely well prepared once they finish. The main drawback is Vermont. If it wasn't for the location, I think this would probably be one of the top destinations. If invited for an interview, you should definitely consider going. The program pays for the hotel and takes you out to a nice dinner the night before.
My Schedule
I interviewed here so most of this is by memory. When I interviewed, I was told that the fellows were no longer covering the inpatient pain service. The hours were very typically 8-5.
My Learning Experience
I thought the faculty was fantastic. Dr. Rathmell is the strength of the program and education is of utmost importance to him. There was time set aside each week for didactic sessions, but I can't remember the days and the amount of time.
My Life and Environment
All the fellows got along well with each other. One fellow goes back to her family in Boston on the weekends. The clinic is beautiful with the latest equipment. I believe they have three fluoro suites with DSA software. Given the schedule, I can't imagine the fellows not having a life outside of work.
