Penn has one of the top-ranked residency training programs in the country and their residents go on to get great fellowships (retina at beaumont, etc...). Residents are all very very happy.
In terms of clinical experience, they have a VA, urban population, and the Children's Hospital of Phila.
Program Director has been there a long time, has a great reputation, and really cares about education.
Research is heavily emphasized, and the program is especially strong in retina research.
My Schedule
Review by rotating medical student. Ophthalmology residency at UPenn covers 4 locations all within a few blocks - HUP, Presbyterian, CHOP, and VA.
7am lectures 4 days a week, then clinics start around 8:30/9. Finish at 5. No weekend lectures. Most rotations have a PGY2 and 1 or 2 PGY3/4's. Call is split up by years, with PGY2 covering 2 places and PGY3 covering the remaining 2 sites. PGY4 is backup call, but is buddy-call with PGY2 for first few months.
My Learning Experience
Faculty are all great, interested in teaching. Conferences at 7am most days, and 3 hours protected lecture time Monday mornings.
My Life and Environment
Excellent environment. Very resident-friendly. Facilities in various states depending on location.
Residents have time for life outside of work.
